The Second Mainland-Taiwan Conference for Constructed Wetland sponsored by Sun Yat-sen University (Taiwan) and Institute of Hydrobiology (CAS) was held in kaohsiung, Taiwan from May 17th to 24th, 2009. Over 80 experts on constructed wetland from Chinese Mainland, Taiwan and Hong Kong were invited to attend this conference. IHB prof. Zhenbin WU, director of Center for Water Environment Engineering and Prof. Lei YANG, director of the Research Center for Water Resource at Sun Yat-sen University acted as the secretary-general of the conference.

Prof. Lei YANG and Prof. Minhong HUANG from Hong Kong Baptist University made keynote speeches respectively at the conference. Prof. Zhi MAO, CAS academician from Wuhan University, Prof. L. C. Brown from Ohio University and Dr. Yaqian ZHAO from University College Dublin were invited to made presentations on their newly achieved progress in the field of constructed wetland. Over 60 experts including Mr. Shuren JIN, Xiangcan JIN, Hainan KONG, Wei ZHU, Shida HUANG, Zhihong YE made presentations on the topics such as planning and design of constructed wetland, purification mechanism and effect, survey and analysis of wetland, NGO and public participation, wetland engineering etc.

The conference participants visited several wetland engineering projects including Kaohsiung Zhou-Zai Wetland Park, Wetland Park which is the World Games main stadium in Kaohsiung, Dapeng Bay Scenic Area which is famous for its mangrove, the special trees thriving in wetland with high contains of salts, low nutrients and erosion of waves, and Fataan Wetland (Mataian Wetland) etc.

Over the past decade, research and application of constructed wetland get a rapid development across the Straits. With joint efforts been made by IHB and Sun Yat-sen University, the proposal that a mechanism for cooperation and academic exchanges across the Straits should be set up is unanimously agreed. In June 2008, the First Mainland-Taiwan Conference for Constructed Wetland sponsored by IHB and Sun Yat-sen University was successfully held in Wuhan, providing a communication platform for researchers on constructed wetland across the Straits. It was decided at this conference that the Mainland-Taiwan Conference for Constructed Wetland will be held in turn in different cities across the Straits every year. The successful opening of the Second Mainland-Taiwan Conference for Constructed Wetland is a significant symbol for the establishment of a long-term and cooperative academic mechanism in the field of constructed wetland across the Straits.

During the conference, experts across the Straits had an extensively bilateral and multi-lateral communication on constructed wetland and several cooperative intentions have been reached. It is preliminarily decided that the third Mainland-Taiwan Conference for Constructed Wetland will be held in Nanjing, 2010.
