Prof. SONG Maoyong from Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences, paid a visit to IHB on Nov. 26, 2019.

Prof. SONG Maoyong from Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences, paid a visit to Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB), Chinese Academy of Sciences for academic exchanges on Nov. 26, 2019. During his visit, he gave a lecture entitled “A new technique and application that enables real-time monitoring of label-free nanoparticles within cells” to IHB scholars and students.

In his lecture, Prof. Song introduced the scientific problems that label-free nanoparticles (NPs) could not be long, real-time observation under electron microscope and dark-field microscope, and his team had developed a new scattered light imaging technology based on confocal microscope.

With a resolution of 10nm, this technique can observe the complete shape of NPs, which was independent of material coating. With a higher detection rate than electron microscopy, it could enable real-time monitoring of label-free NPs and fluorescent biomolecules in live cells.

Using this technique, his team had observed the transformation of single particle and the degradation of nanowire by macrophages in vivo for the first time. This method could be used to study the transmembrane transport, intracellular distribution, transformation process and interaction with biomolecules of NPs at the level of single particle, which was expected to be widely used in nano-medicine and nano-toxicology research.

Prof. Song was a recipient of the Outstanding Youth Fund of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. He was the vice director of the state key laboratory of environmental chemistry and ecotoxicology and the key laboratory of environmental nanotechnology and health effects. He mainly engaged in the study of environmental pollutants and the toxicological effects of artificial nanomaterials. He also had published more than 70 papers in academic journals. Among 65 papers were published in the international core journals, such as JACS, Chem. Commun., Environ. Sci. Technol., Arch. Toxiocl.
