Mr. Martyn Roper, British Embassy Chargé d’Affaires, play with the porpoise.

Mr. Martyn Roper, British Embassy Chargé d’Affaires, together with Mr. Nick Whittingham, Consul General at British Consulate General Wuhan, paid a visit to Baiji Dolphinarium of Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of Chinese Academy of Sciences on Nov. 1, 2017.

In the living area of the Yangtze finless porpoise, IHB Prof. WANG Kexiong, secretary general of Wuhan Baiji Conservation Foundation, introduced the threats that the porpoises had been facing and the construction of porpoise nature reserve. Mr. Roper said Britain had been working hard to protect wildlife by means of funds, policies and international cooperation. He was glad to intimately play with the porpoise and saw its lovely smile which made him warm inside. What made him more excited was that he could feed them and wash the pool with the volunteers. He hoped China and Britain could cooperate with each other in similar ways so as to join hands to protect the environment, the wildlife and support sustainable development.

China has taken important measures to protect the finless porpoise. This is of great significance for the realization of sustainable development and the conservation of species. At present, the Sino-British ties have entered a golden era. It is hoped that by strengthening an all-round cooperation, esp. cooperation in sustainable development and climate change, could help build a more harmonious world for the mankind and the porpoises.
