Prof. Jesse Trushenski, president-elect of American Fisheries Society, paid a visit to IHB on November 6, 2017.

Prof. Jesse Trushenski, president-elect of American Fisheries Society, together with James Bowker, fish biologist at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, paid a visit to Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of Chinese Academy of Sciences on November 6, 2017. During their visit, they gave oral presentations with the titles of “Emerging information about fatty acid requirements in fish” and “Legal and judicious use of fish medicines in U.S. aquaculture and fisheries management” respectively.

Jesse Trushenski began her presentation with her research on the basic information of biosynthetic pathways. She introduced the fatty acids and fatty acid requirements. She pointed that EFA (essential fatty acid) requirements must be defined in terms of specific fatty acids based on physiological functions. Requirements for LC-PUFA (polyunsaturated fatty acid) are based on the inability to synthesize these nutrients de novo. In other words, trophic level is a much more instructive criterion than salinity or thermal guild, and the requirements are likely to vary based on life stage, rearing conditions, and composition of the diet.

James Browker introduced the specific management practices for the use of fish drugs in aquaculture in the U.S., as well as the background of U.S Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), Aquatic Animal Drug Approval Partnership Program (AADAP), available fish drugs or medications in the production, and related legal and principles.

Jesse Trushenski was elected as the president-elect of American Fisheries Society in August 2017. James Bowker is now fish biologist at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
