The Symposium on Frontiers of Algae Biology, jointly organized by the Key Laboratory of Algae Biology and Center for Algae Biology & Applied research under Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of Chinese Academy of Science was held on December 11, 2017. Four Experts were invited to give oral presentations at the symposium, and more than 60 scholars and students from IHB attended the symposium and communicated with the experts in depth. Prof. XU Xudong, deputy director of IHB, attended the symposium and gave a welcome speech.

Prof. QIU Baosheng from Central China Normal University gave a speech on the molecular mechanisms of Terrestrial cyanobacterium Nostoc flagelliforme. Based on the whole genome sequencing of the terrestrial cyanobacterium Nostoc flagelliforme, Prof. Qiu’s team combined the methods of transcription and protein group to study the molecular mechanism of how the terrestrial cyanobacterium Nostoc flagelliforme adapt to different environment such as drying, after water, strong ultraviolet.

Prof. DUANMU Deqiang from Huazhong Agricultural University gave an oral presentation with the title of “The Light adaptation mechanism of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is regulated by the bile pigment”. He introduced the research progress of the study on the carbon concentration mechanism by using the model Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. He also introduced the reverse bile pigment signaling pathway and biological function of bile pigment biosynthetic corresponding, and confirmed that the Chlamydomonas reinhardtii relies on light adaptation mechanism of bile pigment.

Prof. SONG Lirong from IHB gave an oral presentation with the title of “Ecological adaptability and harm prevention and of cyanobacteria Microcystis”. He introuced the competitive advantage and dynamic characteristics of microcysts, and analyzed the environmental return, risk assessment and control of cyanobacteria.

Prof. ZHANG Cheng-cai from IHB gave an oral presentation with the title of “Cellular and metabolic signaling in cyanobacteria”. He introduced the new findings and development of carbon and nitrogen metabolism in cyanobacteria. These four presentations focused on the genetic, cellular, molecular and ecological aspects, and introduced the related frontier problems of algal biology.
