The ScienceX Symposium: to understand and manage lake ecosystems across continents was held at IHB on August 17, 2018.

The ScienceX Symposium: to understand and manage lake ecosystems across continents, organized by the State Key Laboratory of Freshwater Ecology and Biotechnology, International Society of Limnology and CAS Youth Innovation Promotion Association, was held at Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of Chinese Academy of Sciences on August 17, 2018. It is a symposium aims to promote the exchange of research findings and knowledge in understanding of lake ecosystems and their management, contributing to future strategies for broader international collaboration.

IHB’s deputy director (executive) Prof. YIN Zhan gave a welcome speech. The symposium was co-chaired by IHB Prof. LIU Jiashou, deputy director of National Research Center for Freshwater Fisheries Engineering (Wuhan), and Prof. Assaf Sukenik, former director of Israel Oceanographic and Limnological Research.

Prof. Ilia Ostrovsky, director of Israel Oceanographic and Limnological Research, gave an oral presentation with the title of “Coupling of physical & biological processes in a deep subtropical lake”. Prof. Malgorzata Godlewska from European Regional Centre for Ecohydrology of the Polish Academy of Sciences gave an oral presentation with the title of “Spatial mismatch between fish and Microcystis bloom in the Sulejow Reservoir, Poland, as revealed by hydroacoustic measurements”. Prof. Jan Kubecka from Institute of Hydrobiology, Biology Centre, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic gave an oral presentation with the title of “Brief outline of long-term ecological research into water reservoirs in the Czech Republic, interplay of changing environment and management.” Prof. David Hamilton from the Australian Rivers Institute at Griffith University gave an oral presentation with the title of “Microcystis blooms: are we searching in the right place?” Prof. Marc Schallenberg from Southern Lakes Research Group at University of Otago gave an oral presentation with the title of “Stressor-response relationships and threshold-based lake management.”

IHB Prof. SONG Lirong gave an oral presentation with the title of “Risk assessment on large-scale cyanobacterial bloom control and treatment – a case study in Taihu Lake”. IHB Associate Prof. YE Shaowen gave an oral presentation with the title of “Diel, seasonal and inter-annual variability of fish abundance and distribution in the Three Gorges Reservoir assessed with hydroacoustics”. IHB Associate Prof. WANG Haijun gave an oral presentation with the title of “Effects of high ammonia on aquatic organisms: pond experiments.”

During the symposium, the invited international experts also visited the Bao’an lake experimental lake research station in Daye, the Three Gorges Work Station in Yichang and the Lu lake station in wuhan. Some experts also conducted one-to-one communication and guidance with young researchers and graduate students of the institute in experimental design, data analysis and paper writing.
