Prof. Robert M. Hughes from Oregon State University gave a lecture on August 27, 2018 at IHB.

Robert M. Hughes, professor of Oregon State University and the former president of American Fisheries Society, paid a visit to Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of Chinese Academy of Sciences on August 27, 2018. During his visit, Prof. Hughes gave a lecture entitled “Bioassessment in Water Resources Management”.

In his lecture, Prof. Hughes introduced bioassessment in water resources management, including its background, sampling effort studies, standard sampling methods, reference condition, before-after control-impact design, probabilistic (dispersed random) design and concluding remarks. Prof. Hughes pointed out that sampling effort and method strongly influence the precision and applicability. Take macroinvertebrate sampling in river basins for example, 10 is the resonable number of jabs carried by kick-net or Surber sampler at each site. It turns out an adequate number of replicates is essentical for precision and accuracy. In addition, reference sample may also depend on the spatial and physical variables.

Prof. Hughes especially introduced bioassessment in water resources management in the climatically and hydromorphologically diverse USA conducted by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). By biomonitoring almost all of the rivers, lakes and wetlands, the USEPA assessed the pressures and risks of the freshwater in USA.
