Professor Daniel Schlenk from University of California, Riverside, paid a visit to IHB on August 30, 2019.

Professor Daniel Schlenk from University of California, Riverside, paid a visit to Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of Chinese Academy of Sciences on August 30, 2019 to give a presentation with the title of "Use of RNA sequencing to predict mechanisms of toxicity of oil in fish".

In the presentation, Prof. Schlenk described his team's use of bioinformatics to predict the effects of crude oil and surface oil (PAHs) on Mahi-mahi juveniles and adult fish.

Through functional prediction, it was found that the target genes of miRNAs are largely involved in the regulation of cardiovascular, visual and nervous system-related pathways.

Researchers also confirmed the prediction results in indoor and outdoor studies, and improved the understanding of the corresponding bioinformatics tools, and proposed that miRNA could be used as a new biomarker in the future research of petroleum pollution ecological hazards.

Prof. Schlenk received his Ph.D. in toxicology from Oregon State University in 1989 and postdoctoral research at Duke University in the United States in 1989-1991. He is currently engaged in the toxic effects and molecular initiation mechanisms of traditional and new environmental pollutants and the aquatic ecology of environmental endocrine disruptors.

As an editor-in-chief of Environmental Science & Technology and Environmental Science & Technology Letter, he is also a member of several editorial boards of environmental science and toxicology such as Toxicological Sciences, Marine Environment Research, Aquatic Toxicology, and has published more than 280 papers as the first author or correspondent author. Articles, cited more than 7,500 times, he also participated in the writing of relevant book chapters.
