Based on more than 10 years’ continuous monitoring and research on the ecosystem of Xiangxi River, Xiangxi River Ecosystem Research Station (XRERS) was jointly established by Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the China Three Gorges Corporation (CTGC) in October 2008. In May 2009, CAS vice president Prof. Shi Erwei and vice general manager of CTGC Cao Guangjing (now President of CTGC) unveiled the plaque for the station.

The main tasks of XRERS are to find the spatial-temporal pattern of ecological factors, to elucidate the substances and energy flow processes, and to reveal the correlations between anthropogenic activities (e.g., watershed land use) and river/reservoir ecosystem responses. The objective is to explore ecology-related management strategies for sustainable development of river/reservoir ecosystem. It is hoped to be developed, through 5-10 years’ effort, into a world-famous center for the study of stream ecology and reservoir ecology, the training/education of personnel, the international cooperation and the promotion of S&T achievements in the river/reservoir basin. At present, preparatory work, which includes location selection, land requisition, construction and equipment purchasing, is being done as planned.
