The Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) frequently communicates and cooperates with foreign institutes. As early as 1950s, IHB began to send professors to attend international conferences or conduct researches in foreign countries. Over the past decade, it has sent nearly 800 people to over 30 countries and regions for the purpose of conducting cooperation and researches with foreign countries, or for advanced studies and short-term visits. In the meantime, it has also received more than 2,200 scholars and experts from nearly 40 countries to undertake academic exchanges, cooperation and advanced studies in China.

International bilateral and multilateral conferences are also held at IHB. In October 1986, the symposium on freshwater dolphins and species conservation, jointly sponsored by China’s Ministry of Environmental Protection, Chinese Academy of Sciences and International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) was held at IHB. It was after this symposium that IUCN ranked Yangtze River dolphin as an endangered species.
