From June 21 to 24, the “Ecological Science, Policy and Management of Inland Waters: a China-UK Workshop” jointly organized by Innovation China-UK and Institute of Hydrobiology was held at our institute. About 100 experts and scholars from both China and Great Britain attended this workshop.  

IHB Prof. Hongzhu WANG hosted the workshop and IHB’s deputy director Prof. Xudong XU, Mr. Zhongwen LEI, director of Hubei Provincial Science & Technology Department, Dr. Hong QIAN from Innovation China-UK made opening and welcome address respectively in the beginning of the workshop. This workshop was supported by the State Key Laboratory of Freshwater Ecology and Biotechnology. 

At the workshop, 14 scholars and experts from both China and Great Britain made keynote speeches, seven of whom were from British universities and institutions, including University of London, Freshwater Biological Association, NERC Centre for Ecology and Hydrology etc.  

Prof. Alan Hildrew who is also chief editor of Freshwater Biology was in the delegation. Chinese scholars who made speeches at the workshop were from Jinan University, Nanjing Institute of Geography and Limnology (CAS), Changjiang River Scientific Research Institute, Nanjing Agricultural University and Institute of Hydrobiology (CAS).  

The speeches cover a variety of topics including river ecosystem management, lake eutrophication and cyanobacterial bloom control, eco-regulation on key reservoirs in the Changjiang River, floodplain ecosystems, streams, agriculture and greenhouse gases, effects of climate changes on lakes, freshwater food webs, freshwater bio-monitoring etc.  

This workshop has pushed forward the knowledge transfer between China and Great Britain and cooperative issues of mutual interest were discussed after the workshop.
