The 13th World Lake Conference

 
IHB Professors made oral presentations at the 13th World Lake Conference held from Nov. 1 to 5 in Wuhan.  

The 13th World Lake Conference was held from Nov. 1 to 5 in Wuhan. About 1,500 internationally renowned experts and scholars from 45 countries, centering on the theme “Lake Ecosystem Restoration: Global Challenges and the Chinese Initiative”, entered into hot spots related to lake pollution and eutrophication control and shared their successful experience in lake conservation and resource management.  

The World Lake Conference is one of the most influential international conferences in global lake environment conservation. This year, the conference is jointly organized by Chinese Society for Environmental Sciences, Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences, Wuhan Municipal Government and International Lake Environment Committee. Institute of Hydrobiology (CAS) is one of the co-organizors of the conference.  

More than 20 IHB experts including IHB Prof. Jiankang LIU, who is now academician of the CAS, present at the conference and submitted papers. They gave 1 plenary report and 9 oral presentations at the conference. Two IHB experts respectively acted as chairpersons of the parallel sessions “Lake shrinks, change in water volume, and ecological degradation” and “Lake preservation and management in Wuhan”. Since the late 1980s, IHB scientists have been conducting researches in lakes of Wuhan, Lake Dian (a large inter-land lake located on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau close to Kunming, Yunnan province), Taihu Lake (a large lake in Yangtze Delta Plain, on the boarder of Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces), Chaohu Lake (a lake located at the juncture of Chaohu and Hefei cities in Anhui province), erhai Lake (the second largest highland lake located in Yunnan province), and West Lake (a famous freshwater lake located in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province), etc. Several research projects of the Water special project (the Water Pollution Control and Management Project) launched by China’s Ministry of Environmental Protection are undertaken by IHB and a series of achievements have been accomplished in the researches in eutrophication, cyanobacterial blooms, algal toxins and constructed wetland etc.   

During and after the conference, several experts and principals of government departments from both home and abroad paid a visit to IHB. 

Besides, IHB chose 75 volunteers, mainly doctoral and postgraduate students, to serve at the conference.
