Inaugural China-Canada Fish Physiology and Developmental Biology Symposium

The symposium was co-chaired by IHB Prof. Zhu Zuoyan (CAS academician) and Prof. Vance L. Trudeau.

The Inaugural China-Canada Fish Physiology and Developmental Biology Symposium, organized by the State Key Laboratory of Freshwater Ecology and Biotechnology, Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB) was held in Wuhan during Oct. 14 and 16. Prof. Vance L. Trudeau from University of Ottawa who is also past-president of North American Society of Comparative Endocrinology (NASCE), Prof. Steve F. Perry who is Professor of Physiology and Endocrinology and also the dean of the Faculty of Science at University of Ottawa, as well as Prof. Thomas W. Moon who is vice dean research of the Faculty of Science at University of Ottawa attended this symposium.

The symposium was co-chaired by IHB Prof. Zhu Zuoyan (CAS academician) and Prof. Vance L. Trudeau. IHB's deputy director Prof. Hu Zhengyu gave a welcome speech. Prof. Perry and IHB Prof. Nie Pin who is also director of the State Key Laboratory of Freshwater Ecology and Biotechnology introduced the research areas, achievements, personnel structure and development goals of their respective lab.

The 3 visiting Canadian professors gave oral presentations with the titles of "physiology of fish at low pH: The zebrafish as a model system", "Human pharmaceuticals as disruptors of fish physiology and metabolism"and "Novel neuroendocrine actions of the peptide secretoneurin: implications for reproduction and growth" respectively. IHB Prof. Sun Yonghua, Prof. Wang Yaping and Prof. Hu Wei gave oral presentations entitled "From developmental biology to biotechnology: raising developmental biotechnology in fish", "Functional Genomics Research in Grass Carp" and "Transgenic fish and its reproductive containment strategies", respectively. Prof. Vance interacted with the members of the Research Group of Fish Gene-Engineering at IHB on the regulation of fish reproductive development.

After the symposium, University of Ottawa and IHB had in-depth interactions on the issues concerning with the joint cultivation of graduate students, academic exchange visits between scholars, establishment of academic exchange and cooperation platforms. It was decided that the 2nd China-Canada Fish Physiology and Developmental Biology Symposium will be held at University of Ottawa in 2014.
