The Second International Conference on Non-point Source Pollution Control and Aquatic Ecosystem Protection

The Second International Conference on Non-point Source Pollution Control and Aquatic Ecosystem Protection was held in Wuhan during Sept. 20 and 23, 2019.

The Second International Conference on Non-point Source Pollution Control and Aquatic Ecosystem Protection, hosted by International Bioprocessing Association, Soil Science Society of China and Geographical Society of China, was held in Wuhan during Sept. 20 and 23, 2019. The conference was organized by Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Institute of Soil Science of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment of Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The theme of the conference is “Emerging pollutants prevention for green development”. The programme covered a wide range of topics from fundamental issues of non-point source pollution control and aquatic ecosystem protection to studies on emerging pollutants of diffuse discharge and bioremediation of surface waters.

Since the 1980s, fertilizer consumption in China has been growing rapidly and China has become one of the biggest producers and consumers of N and P fertilizers in the world. From the last decade, there has been a growing body of opinion that the non-point source pollution is a particularly serious problem in the management of water quality. However, significant progress has been made in the ecotechnologies of non-point source pollution control and the remediation of natural waters. Therefore, this conference brought together non-point source pollution researchers from various background to stimulate discussion, exchange of ideas and networking.

IHB’s deputy director YIN Zhan and SHEN Renfang, director of CAS Institute of Soil Science, gave welcome speeches at the conference. Seven professors gave invited speeches. They were Prof. Pedro J. Alvarez from Rice University, Prof. Thomas Curtis from Newcastle University, Prof. Xiangdong Li from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Prof. ZHU Bo from CAS Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment, Prof. Dionysios D. Dionysiou from University of Cincinnati, Prof. SHI Weiming from CAS Institute of Soil Science and Prof. Huu Hao Ngo from University of Technolgoy Sydney.

More than 500 people from 17 countries discussed the frontier issues and challenges in the non-point source pollution control and aquatic ecosystem protection. IHB Prof. ZHOU Yiyong, SONG Lirong, WU Chenxi and WANG Haijun gave oral presentations in parallel sessions.

IHB’s deputy director YIN Zhan gave remarks at the opening ceremony.

Prof. Pedro J. Alvarez from Rice University in the United States gave keynote speech at the conference.
