IHB's experts conducted research in Ukraine 

The Research Group of Environmental Biochemistry has conducted cooperative research with Ukraine National Academy of Sciences on eutrophication of the water body.  

From October 20th to November 18th in 2007, Ukrainian researcher Dr. Nickolai Shadrin visited IHB in terms of works in laboratory and field, student instructing and academic exchanges etc.; From September 9th to October 4th in 2008, Prof. Yiyong ZHOU, Dr. Xiuyun CAO and Dr. Chunlei SONG paid a return visit to Ukraine.  

From September 15th to September 18th, they attended the 4th International Seminar for Young Scientists with the theme of “Ukraine’s science and its influence on ecological security of the area between Black Sea and Sea of Azov”. Prof. Yiyong ZHOU was invited to deliver a speech at the opening ceremony and later gave a presentation on titled “Eutrophication in Chinese shallow lakes in relation to ecological security”.  

On October 1st, he made an academic report introducing the Institute of Hydrobiology, CAS and its Researches on Lake eutrophication and answered the questions asked by audiences. During the visit period, the researchers in both sides took samples for 5 times in the Black Sea, saline lakes and freshwater ponds respectively, and conducted culture experiments on Dinoflagellata.  

The results indicated that two Dinoflagellata species (Prorocentrum micans and Heterocapsa triguetra) can excrete extracellular phosphatase to hydrolyze organic phosphorus (P) andcompensate P deficiency, which presents a distinct P utilization strategy. It provided additional information on the mechanisms behind algae blooms in freshwater lakes and red tide.  

On the whole, in the course of the cooperative research, both sides brought their academic advantages into full play and got some significant results on which broad prospects for further cooperation was opened up. This research was mainly sponsored by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).
