Canadian Biomathematician Visits Xiangxi River Ecological Station

 

Dr. Yuan YUAN gave a lecture to IHB students 

Invited by Prof. Qinghua CAI, principal investigator of Xiangxi River Ecological Station of CAS/China Three Gorges Project Corporation and professor of Institute of Hydrobiology, CAS, Dr. Yuan YUAN, biomathematician and professor of the Department of Math and Statistics Memorial University of Newfoundland came to IHB and visited Xiangxi River Ecological Station.  

Dr. Yuan Yuan arranged a two-month visit in order to conduct a long-term supervision of Xiangxi River Ecological Station and have a further analysis of the Dynamics Models of algal eutrophication and construct the dynamic system model of phytoplankton at Xiangxi River Ecological Station and discuss the influence of parameter variation on stability.  

Hopefully that through the above-mentioned research work, a new approach can be offered to the research of the breakout mechanism of waterbloom in the Three Gorges Reservoir area. During Dr. Yuan’s visit at IHB, she also gave lectures and explained the fundamental theories and application of Dynamic System Model for students at Xiangxi River Ecological Station. She had a cordial talk with the students.  

It has been 3 years since Xiangxi River Ecological Station established a cooperative relationship with Dr. Yuan. From July 7th to 8th in 2006, Dr. Yuan paid a visit to IHB and made an academic presentation on “Dynamics in Ecology”, which gave a brief introduction to the research background and relevant concepts of dynamics system.  

By illustrating the competitive model, models of insects’ breakout and living red blood cells, she explained the application of dynamics system theory and models to ecology and had a preliminary discussion on the dynamic system model of the breakout of waterbloom in the Three Gorges Reservoir area.  

Dr. Yuan’s research fields includes nonlinear dynamic system, its stability and bifurcation analysis. Her recent researches are delay differentiation equations, application of neural network, analysis of mathematical biology/ecosystem and of dynamics system etc. At present, she has published nearly 30 papers on journals such as: J. Math. Biol, Chaos, Solitons and Fractals, Int. J. Bifurcation and Chaos etc.
