Birgitta Bergman, professor of the Department of Botany at Stockholm University and member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (RSAS), paid a visit to Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB) during April 4 and 7, 2010 at the invitation of the Research Center for Algal Biology and Applied Research in the institute.

Prof. Bergman made a presentation entitled “The eroding genome of a cyanobacterium in a plant symbiosis (Azolla sp.): towards a nitrogen-fixing plastid” for IHB audience on April 6, 2010. In the presentation, she introduced her recent findings in the symbiotic relationship between cyanobacteria and Azolla sp. Based on the research of symbiotic cyanobacterial genome, she put forth a new understanding in co-evolution between cyanobacteria and Azolla sp. This was the highlight of the presentation.

During her stay in the institute, Bergman also communicated with professors and students of the Research Center for Algal Biology and Applied Research. She said, “I feel honored that I got a chance to visit your institute where we exchanged opinions on our recent research. You are really excellent in your algal study. What I'm feeling now is that I’m coming to the paradise of cyanobacterial research.”

Founded in 1793, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences is an independent, non-governmental scientific organization whose overall objective is to promote sciences and strengthen their influence in society.
