IHB Researchers Visit RAS Institute for NSFC-RFBR Project

Dr. GONG Yingchun (2nd L) and Senior Technician FENG Weisong (2nd R), two IHB researchers, paid a visit to the Group of Protozoology at Institute of Biology of Inland Waters, Russian Academy of Sciences during Oct 13 and 23, 2010.
During Oct.13 and 23, at the invitation of Prof. Alexander Mylnikov from the Institute of Biology of Inland Waters, Russian Academy of Sciences, Dr. GONG Yingchun and Senior Technician FENG Weisong, two researchers working in the Research Group of Taxonomy and Ecology of Protozoa at Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB), paid a visit to the Group of Protozoology at Institute of Biology of Inland Waters, Russian Academy of Sciences for the joint NSFC-RFBR project "Biodiversity patterns of protozoa in large rivers: testate amoebae and heterotrophic flagellates from the rivers Chang Jiang and Volga”.

The Group of Protozoology at Institute of Biology of Inland Waters, Russian Academy of Sciences has long been engaged in the study of heterotrophic flagellates. So far, over 300 species of heterotrophic flagellates has been cloned by the Group, providing a solid foundation for further study on the taxonomy and molecular biology of heterotrophic flagellates.

During their stay in Russia, both the Chinese and Russian researchers interacted with each other on sample collection of heterotrophic flagellates, monoclonal culture, species identification, data processing and proposed programs for the follow-up study. Dr. Gong also made a presentation entitled "Phylogenies of Peritrichs (Ciliophora, Oligohymenophorea) based on Alpha-tubulin and Small Subunit rRNA genes”. Both sides hoped to establish a more extensive cooperative relationship.

Gong and Feng later visited the Zoological Institute of Russian Academy of Sciences which is situated in St. Petersburg. The deceased IHB Prof. SHEN Yunfen, a professor of protozoology and also academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, studied at this institute during 1957 and 1961. She received her PhD degree here in 1961.
