Prof. Zhu Zuoyan Attends 2013 World Aquaculture Society Meeting
Prof. Zhu Zuoyan gave a presentation as a keynot speaker at the WAS Meeting.
The 2013 World Aquaculture Society (WAS) Meeting was held in Nashville, Tennessee during February 21-25, 2013. About 2,500 scholars from all around the world attended the meeting. Centered on the theme “Strike a Chord for Sustainable Aquaculture”, attendees had extensive and in-depth interaction on issues of mutual interest. Prof. Zhu Zuoyan (CAS academician) and Prof. Hu Wei from Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB) were invited to participate in this meeting.
Invited as a keynote speaker, Prof. Zhu gave a presentation entitled “Current research status in developing growth hormone-transgenic common carp for aquaculture”. In his presentation, he reviewed the beginning of the breeding of transgenic fish in China as well as its growing and developing process. Prof. Zhu systematically illustrated the newest research achievements made by the transgenic fish research team at IHB, such as the breeding of fast growing “full-fish” GH gene transferred common carp, the evaluation of food safety and ecological risks, the fertility–controlling strategy that solves the potential problems brought by transgenic fish, genome research in grass carp followed by excavating functional genes and new technologies in fish molecular breeding. He also described the prospect for the development of the breeding of transgenic fish in the future.
After the meeting, Prof. Zhu and Prof. Hu visited the University of Maryland’s Department of Marine Biotechnology (DMB).
