IHB Researcher Attends International Congress of Protistology XIV

Dr. Gong Yingchun gave an oral presentation at the ICOP XIV held in Vancouver.

The International Congress of Protistology XIV (ICOP XIV) was held from July 28 to August 2, 2013 in Vancouver, BC, Canada. About 300 scholars and experts from 25 countries including Canada, China, the United States, U.K., Germany, Australia, Austria, Holland, Finland, etc, attended the Congress. In total, 5 keynote speeches as well as 175 oral presentations and 111 posters were made at the Congress.

At the invitation of Prof. Denis Lynn, president of the ICOP XIV Congress, Dr. Gong Yingchun, Associate Professor of Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB) attended the Congress and gave an oral presentation entitled “Identification and grazing characterization of Poterioochromonas anderseni sp. nov. (Chrysophyceae) during the mass culture of Chlorella zofingiensis (Chlorophyceae)”. Poterioochromonas anderseni, one flagellate, also called as chrysophyceae, was found from mass Chlorella culture.  This flagellate was mixotrophic, capable of both photosynthesis and phagotrophy, and had high risk to infect the Chlorella culture and graze the algae cells. When the contamination happened, this flagellate could make the culture crash within two to four days, and caused great harm to the mass culture of Chlorella

The first International Congress of Protistology was held in Prague in 1961. It was then held every four years. The 15th Congress will be held in Czech in 2017. China once organized the 12th Congress in Guangzhou in July 2005.
