More than 40 delegates from the 1st China-Canada Water Environment Symposium which was organized by the Ministry of Environmental Protection paid a visit to the pilot engineering project which is located in the West Lake Resort, Hangzhou. The project is supported by the Major Science and Technology Program for Water Pollution Control and Treatment and is aimed at improving the water environment in the West Lake.

The major participants of the project gave introduction and explanation to the delegates about the ecological restoration and water environment improvement achieved in the project during the eleventh and twelfth Five Year Plan.

In the eleventh Five Year Plan period, the project Technology research and engineering demonstration of water quality improvement and aquatic vegetation construction of landscape lake in typical southern city was undertaken by Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB). Based on this project, the project Technology research and engineering demonstration of water environment improvement in urban landscape lake undertaken by IHB in the twelfth Five Year Plan aimed at solving the water environment problems in the West Lake. In order to achieve this goal, IHB researchers developed technologies that can divert water from Qiantang River so as to reduce its nitrogen content. They optimized the technologies of water diversion, distribution and drainage, restored the submerged macrophyte vegetation and developed the technology of stabilization regulation and algae-inhibiting on ecological niche spatial heterogeneity.
