US Fisheries Colleagues Visit IHB for Control and Management Solutions of Invasive Asian Carps
The US fishery colleagues visited Wuhu lake field station
Fish Biologist and invasive carp research leader Duane Chapman from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Columbia Environmental Research Center, together with project manager Kevin Irons from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, and fisherman representative David Buchman from Illinois paid a visit to Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB) during October 19-20, 2015. They communicated and discussed the potential application of Chinese traditional “united fishing method” in fishery resources management in the US, especially in controlling the invasive Asian carps in the Mississippi River basin.
During the visit, Profs. LI Zhongjie, LIU Jiashou, ZHANG Tanglin and CHEN Yushun introduced the basic theory and practical application of Chinese traditional “united fishing method” in China. The US colleagues showed strong interests and were trying to apply this method to the fishery resources management and Asian carps control in the US.
Accompanied by Profs. ZHANG Tanglin and CHEN Yushun, the visiting US colleagues also paid a visit to the field research stations of IHB in Wuhu Lake and Niushanhu Lake. They examined the lake fishery resources management and fishing methods at Wuhan Lake station. At the Niushanhu Lake station, they learned the details and usages of “united fishing method”. After that, the US colleagues indicated that they would import and push forward the application of this great solution in US timely. Colleagues from both sides also reached a preliminary agreement that they would work together in controlling invasive Asian carps in the US.
