Experts from the Netherlands Visit IHB

Prof. Mooij gave an oral presentation at IHB

A three-member delegation including Prof. Wolfgang Maria Mooij and Dr. Annette Janse from Wageningen University and Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO), as well as Prof. Jan Janse from Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL) and NIOO paid a visit to Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB) during Sept. 26 and 29, 2016.

During their visit, Prof. Mooij gave an oral presentation with the title of “Spatial-temporal modeling of aquatic ecosystems”. In his presentation, he emphasized the importance of ecological modeling when making contaminated water assessments or dealing with the management problems. He introduced the development of ecological modeling and explained the complexity of issues to be considered in the process of establishing a PC Lake model. He then demonstrated the superiority of the model from a theoretical point.

Towards the end of the presentation, he pointed out that the model established now would be changed with the scientific development, and that some complex models would be simplified and easy to be applied gradually. He exchanged views with the audience on time scale, complexity and the food web during the process of ecological modeling.

Dr. Janse subsequently gave an oral presentation with the title of “A model framework to link biodiversity and ecosystem services of lakes and wetlands to global hydrology and land-use”. He introduced a global collaborative project that their team was implementing, and explained how to create a global model which contained both biological social factors by combining the early PC Lake model that they had established with a variety of social factors such as legal factors, economic factors and so on. He also described the foundation and application of his model in detail. As for the market-oriented promotion and application of his model, Dr. Janse explained the theoretical basis and some typical successful cases in the Netherlands.

The three visiting experts, accompanied by IHB Dr. WANG Haijun, visited the Bao’an Lake, which is located in Daye city, Huibei province. They visited the whole-ecosystem simulations in the lake’s field station, and exchanged views with the students who were responsible for the management and experiment conduct at the station. Later, they met WU Qingming, vice director of the National Wetland Park Service of Bao’an Lake, and discussed with him about the ecological restoration of lakes and watershed management of the lake.
