Dr. Krishna R. Salin from Asian Institute of Technology Visits IHB

Dr. Krishna R. Salin gave a lecture for IHB researchers and students.

On February 20th, 2017, Dr. Krishna R. Salin from the Aquaculture and Aquatic Resources Management (AARM), School of Environment Resources and Development of Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand, paid a visit to Institute Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB). During his visit, he gave a lecture with the title of “Sustainable aquaculture technology in Thailand – a green future for blue revolution” to IHB researchers and students. Prof. XIE Shouqi, deputy director of IHB, hosted the lecture. About 50 people including Prof. WANG HongZhu, Prof. XIE Songguang and Associate Prof. HAN Dong attended the lecture.

Dr. Krishna R. Salin began his lecture by introducing the pollution problems and the year-by-year output reduction of fish meal. He put emphasis on the necessity to develop sustainable aquaculture. Taking the shrimp farming as an example, he introduced some sustainable farming methods that can save feed and reduce pollution in Thailand. One of them is the combination of biofloc technology and fermented plant protein: firstly ferment rice bran and soybean with probiotics, then put them in the shrimp pond with sugar; those plankton in the pond will reproduce fast, so shrimps can feed on plankton as natural feed. In this way, the usage of both the animal protein and the feed will be reduced.

Based on this method, the recycling feed system in pond makes some improvements: ferment 50% feed, 49% fermented rice bran, soybean and sugar and 1% yeast for 48 hour, then put them into the shrimp ponds; divert the sludge to the tilpia ponds, in which the tilapias will feed on the waste made in the shrimp ponds; finally, recirculate the purified water to the shrimp ponds. This system helps to purify water and reuse the nutrient, thus realizing the sustainable development of shrimp feeding.

IHB researchers and students further discussed with Dr. Krishna R. Salin about aspects such as aquaculture models for shrimp feeding, development of the biofloc technology in Thailand and China, and what species are suitable to feed when applying biofloc technology.
