IHB Professor Attends 2017 Annual Meeting of IWC Scientific Committee
Prof. WANG Ding (2nd R) from Institute of Hydrobiology of Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB) attended the 2017 Annual Meeting of International Whaling Committee Scientific Committee in Slovenia from May 9 to May 22, 2017.
The 2017 Annual Meeting of International Whaling Committee Scientific Committee was held at the Hotel Golf in the resort of Bled, Slovenia from May 9 to May 22, 2017. More than 120 scientists from all over the world attended the meeting. Prof. WANG Ding from Institute of Hydrobiology of Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB) was invited to attend the meeting.
At the meeting, Prof. Wang introduced the study and progress achieved in the conservation of Yangtze finless porpoise for the past two years. He stressed the major adjustment made by the Chinese government in the construction of ecological civilization and environment protection and how the government had been enhancing the conservation of porpoises. He also mentioned that as the authoritative department, the Ministry of Agriculture conducted all sorts of effective conservative measures to push forward the porpoise’s conservation to a higher level. IHB and other institutions had been involved in this.
The chairman of the IUCN expert panel and the principal of the U.S. Marine Mammal Commission said to Prof. Wang that they hoped to have a field trip to investigate the conservation status of the Yangtze finless porpoises. Several scientists hoped to learn experiences from China to save the vaquita porpoise in Mexico.
