IHB Scholars Attend SIL 2018

 

43 scholars from IHB attended the SIL 2018 held in Nanjing from August 19th to 24th, 2018. 

43 scholars from Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of Chinese Academy of Sciences attended the International Society of Limnology XXXIV Congress (SIL 2018) which was held in Nanjing from August 19th to 24th, 2018. They gave presentations to share their recent research findings and discussed topics of mutual interests with other attendees.    

The theme for this year’s congress was “Limnology, a science for the Preservation and Restoration of Aquatic Ecosystems.” The congress was jointly organized by Nanjing Institute of Geography and Limnology under Chinese Academy of Science, Soil Science Society of China and other units. It is the first time that the SIL has been held in China.    

Nearly 600 delegates from about 100 countries participating in this congress, including the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Holland, Demark, Italy and New Zealand. Topics of this congress were lake eutrophication, water quality safe and management, governance and restorations of aquatic ecosystems and climate change.    

At the opening ceremony, a special session was arranged for remembering the ISL members who had passed away. Prof. Yves Prairie, chairman of SIL, reviewed IHB Prof. LIU Jiangkan’s outstanding contributions to the development of limnology in China and the world and affirmed his pioneering role in freshwater ecology and fish experimental biology in China. Prof. Yves also called the scientists to learn from Prof. Liu’s continuous pursuit of truth and selfless dedication to scientific research. 

Inland Waters is a journal of the International Society of Limnology and an editor meeting was held during the conference to discuss the overall strategic orientation of the journal, its role in promoting the development of international limnology and in helping early professional limnologists. Associate Prof. WANG Haijun was invited to join the editorial board of the journal. 

The SIL Congress is the most influential academic conference on the comprehensive study of inland water. It acts as a significant international communication platform for new achievements, new ideas and new technologies for lakes river and other water bodies, which makes the SIL an irreplaceable significant role in the development of limnology. The congress is held every two or three years. The first meeting was held in Kiel,Germany,1922. The International Society of Limnology XXXV Congress will be held from 23th to 28th, August 2022 in Gwangju, Korea.
