IHB Researchers Attend US-China Workshop 2019

The US-China Workshop 2019: Rules of Life: A Fading Cryosphere Shifting Temperature and Stoichiometry in Mountain Lakes and Streams was held at Flathead Lake Biological Station, University of Montana during April 28 and May 5, 2019.

The US-China Workshop 2019: Rules of Life: A Fading Cryosphere Shifting Temperature and Stoichiometry in Mountain Lakes and Streams was held at Flathead Lake Biological Station, University of Montana during April 28 and May 5, 2019. The workshop was jointly organized by Prof. WU Chenxi from Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Prof. James Elser from University of Montana. It was co-sponsored by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and National Science Foundation in the United States.

A total of 39 experts and scholars from 24 research institutions in China, the United States, Canada, Switzerland and Austria attended the workshop. IHB Prof. WU Chenxi, Prof. XU Jun, Associate Prof. YU Gongliang and Assistant Prof. FENG Xiu gave oral presentations with the title of “Characteristics of Water Eco-environment in Qinghai Lake”, “Energy mobilization for top consumers in Tibetan lakes”, “Characteristics of chlorophyll a concentration and transparency in Qinghai Lake under climate variation” and “Morphological and genetic divergence between lake and river populations of Triplophysa in Ngangtse Co”, respectively.

Participants shared their scientific data, important research results and scientific findings, and had in-depth exchanges and discussions on the topics such as climate, cryosphere, geochemistry, biology and ecology.

Through group discussion, the attendees outlined the review article “Rules of life and the fading alpine cryosphere: impacts on mountain lakes and streams”, which will comprehensively review the rules of life related to temperature, light and nutrient dynamics and how their changes affect lake and stream ecosystems in the fading cryosphere.

The US-China Workshop 2017 “Impacts of a changing cryosphere on lakes and streams in mountain regions” was held in Qinghai Lake, China. The US-China Workshop 2019 was to establish a framework for US/China joint data centers and of producing a database across multiple sites in both countries that can assess how emergent ecosystem metabolism in alpine lakes and streams reflects underlying changes in ecosystem temperature, community size spectra, and nutrient stoichiometry.
