The 1^st Sino-German Binational Symposium on Cyanobacteria was held at IHB from September 25 to 29, 2019. 

The 1^st Sino-German Binational Symposium on Cyanobacteria was held at Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) from September 25 to 29, 2019. This meeting was jointly organized by IHB, CAS Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy and Bioprocess Technology, University of Rostock and University of Freiburg. It was undertaken by the CAS Key Laboratory of Algae Biology.             

Prof. ZHANG Cheng-cai, director of the Key Laboratory of Algae Biology, presided over the opening ceremony. Prof. ZHAO Jindong, CAS academician, and Prof. HU Wei, IHB’s deputy director, attended the meeting and delivered opening speeches.  

More than 310 delegates from 56 institutions including universities, research institutes and enterprises from home and abroad participated in this conference.  

The theme of the conference is “From the Genomic Blueprint to Application: Cyanobacteria in Fundamental Research, Biotechnology and Synthetic Biology”, featuring topics like "synthetic biology and rational cell design", "cell development and multicellular behavior", "photosynthesis and metabolism", "biodiversity, biotechnology and environment".  

During the meeting, 38 guests from China, Germany and other countries (France, Spain, the United States, Britain and Australia) made academic reports, and 28 academic posters were exhibited.           

During the meeting, experts, scholars and graduate students in the field of cyanobacteria from China, Germany and other countries actively exchanged and discussed their recent research results, providing new visions for future research on bioenergetics, metabolism, regulation and biodiversity of cyanobacteria, as well as the newest developments of cyanobacterial biotechnology and synthetic biology.  

This conference provided a platform for in-depth exchanges of the latest research results in the field of cyanobacteria and had a far-reaching impact on promoting international cooperation and development in this field.  

It is decided at the conference that the second Sino-German Binational Symposium on Cyanobacteria will be held in Germany in 2021.
