Professor from University of Hong Kong Visits IHB

Prof. Steven Feng Chen, a well-known microalgae expert from School of Biological Sciences of the University of Hong Kong, paid a visit to Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB) from Jan.16 to 18, 2010. During his stay in the institute, he made a presentation entitled “Microalgae biotechnology and beyond” for the audience. He later reached a preliminary agreement on future cooperation with the Research Center for Algal Biology and Applied Research at IHB.

Prof. Chen’s presentation displayed his major achievements accomplished during his study of microalgae biotechnology. He particularly elucidated the significance of heterotrophic culture in the application and industrial exploration of microalgae and introduced the approaches to solve the existing problems in heterotrophic culture of microalgae. In the meantime, he also introduced the ongoing research carried out in his lab. Currently, they transfer and express the specific microalgal gene with economic value into crops (tomatoes, etc.) to obtain the target outcome. Their research has a promising future for application.
