Prof. Zhou Qixing, president of the College of Environmental Science and Engineering of Nankai University, paid a visit to Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB) on June 1. During his visit, he made a presentation entitled "Research and Prospect of Ecotoxicology Effects of Combined Pollution”.

Firstly, Prof. Zhou introduced the historic development and theories of ecotoxicology. He reviewed from the recognition of toxicology by the ancient people to the establishment of modern toxicology, the interdisciplinary development between toxicology and other disciplines, establishment of its own disciplinary structure, and the extensive application of toxicology in the industrial and agricultural production. As a branch of toxicology, Prof. Zhou summed up several principles in the study of ecotoxicology, including theories of dose-effect relationship, structure-activity relationship, multi-level effects, toxicokinetics and toxicodynamics, ecological adaptability. Based on the laboratory work, Prof. Zhou introduced the progresses made in the ecotoxicology effects of coexposure. As the environment gets more and more polluted, coexposure can truthfully manifest the toxicological properties in terrestrial or aquatic environment. Different from the exposure of single compound, combined effects caused by coexposure should take various factors into consideration such as chemical properties and concentrations, targeted species and ecosystem of toxicology etc.

In addition, Prof. Zhou also introduced the vectorial property of coexposure, interactive fraction, the

restrictions on the standard for soil environment qualityand recovery. In conclusion, since new types of pollutants continuously enter the environment and the standard for soil environment recovery in China still needs improvement, Prof. Zhou pointed out that it was very urgent to establish the standard for soil environment recovery and carry out researches related with combined stress and combined ecological toxicology with the aim to establish effective treatment of the new types of pollutants.
