Prof. Yang Lei from Sun Yat-sen University in Taiwan to Hold Serial Lectures at IHB

Prof. Yang Lei from Sun Yat-sen University in Taiwan paid a visit to IHB on Nov. 11.

Prof. Yang Lei from Sun Yat-sen University in Taiwan paid a visit to Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB) on Nov. 11. During his visit, Prof. Yang gave a lecture entitled "Ecosystem and habitat restoration ecological engineering". As the Visiting Professor of IHB, Prof. Yang will hold serial lectures on the ecosystem and habitat restoration ecological engineering in the following one and a half month.

In his lecture, Prof. Yang introduced the developing history of ecological engineering in different parts of the world. By comparing the developing trends of constructed wetland across the Straits, he applied Chinese philosophical concept Yin and Yang as well as Wu Xing or Five Elements to the description of the ecological engineering. He said that a harmony between nature and mankind is the major idea.

Prof. Yang later discussed the function of ecosystem and the development and challenges that ecological engineering faced during the past 40 years. He also talked about the necessity and feasibility of the construction of ecological engineering and ecosystem restoration. Based on a global view, Prof. Yang illustrated and analyzed some real cases.

Prof. Yang will hold four lectures which will be: Definition, development, classification and principle for ecosystem and habitat restoration ecological engineering, Ecosystem and habitat restoration ecological engineering for lake and reservoir restoration, Ecosystem and habitat restoration ecological engineering for stream and river restoration, Ecosystem and habitat restoration ecological engineering for coastal zone restoration.

Prof. Yang is currently the director of the Department of Marine Environment and Engineering and the director of Center for Water Resources Studies at Sun Yat-sen University. He is one of the representative experts in ecological engineering of Taiwan. Prof. Yang has established a long-term and friendly cooperation with IHB.

Together with IHB Prof. Wu Zhenbin, he launched and organized the first Mainland-Taiwan Conference for Constructed Wetland. The conference provides a significant platform for scientists from both Mainland and Taiwan to communicate with each other in ecological engineering.
