The 17th Symposium of Chinese Society of Phycology (CSP) was successfully convened in Wuhan from Nov 17–20,2013. This symposium was sponsored by Chinese Society of Phycology, under supervision of Chinese Oceanology and Limnology (CSOL), and organized by Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB, CAS). More than 600 scholars and graduate students from 111 universities, institutes and government units, as well as staff and representatives from 16 enterprises participated in the symposium.
Prof. Song Lirong, President of CSP, presided over the opening ceremony. Prof Yang Hongsheng, Secretary-General of CSOL, and Prof Hu Zhengyu, deputy director of IHB, addressed the ceremony. Prof Pang Shaojun, Vice President of CSP, reported the CSP's work in the last two years. The awards for excellent phycological research papers were also presented at the meeting.
The symposium was divided into four sessions, i.e. keynote, parallel, poster and special sessions. Eight professors gave keynote speeches including "Integration: route for algal biology development" by Prof. Liu Yongding from IHB, "A new platform technology for microalgae cultivation——10 years of progress on serial heterotrophy-dilution-photoinduction cultivation" by Prof. Li Yuanguang from East China University of Science and Technology, "How microalgae make oil: dual perspectives from a population and a single cell" by Prof. Xu Jian from Qingdao Institute of Biomass Energy and Bioprocess Technology, CAS, "Relationship between changes of oceanic carbonate system and carbon fixation of algae" by Prof. Gao Kunshan from Xiamen University, "Structure of phycobillisome and its combination with PSⅡ" by Prof. Zhao Jindong (CAS academician, director of IHB), "Assembly and length regulation of flagella in Chlamydomonas" by Prof. Pan Junmin from Tsinghua University,"Two probable mechanisms for frequent explosion and geographical spreading of marine dinoflagellate red tide" by Prof. Tang Yingzhong from Institute of Oceanology, CAS, and "Primary study on the environmental adaptation of oceanic invasive green algae, Codium fragile" by Prof. Ding Lanping from Shantou University.
Four topics were discussed in parallel sessions, including algal diversity and ecology, algal physiology and algal environmental biology, algal biotechnology and bioenergy, and macroalgae biology and resource application. There were also two special sessions during the symposium, "Algal biotechnology and industrialization" organized by Prof. Hu Qiang from IHB and "Trends and countermeasures of marine red tide and cyanobacterial bloom" organized by Prof. Lv Songhui from Jinan University.
This symposium received 144 oral presentation and 90 posters in total, and had the maximum number of participants in its history. The important and hot issues concerning fundamental knowledge and application of phycology and bottle neck of technology in the development of algal industrialization were fully discussed by scholars.
The inaugural meeting of the first CSP was held in Wuhan in 1979. IHB organized the 4th general meeting in conjunction with symposium of CSP in 1991.
