Prof. Gui Jianfang was elected as a new member of Chinese Academy of Sciences. |
A group of 62 elite Chinese and foreign scientists were formally inducted as members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) at a recent ceremony in Beijing. Prof. Gui Jian-Fang from Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB) was elected to the life sciences and medical sciences division as a new member of CAS.
Born in June 1956 in Huangmei, a county under the administration of Huanggang City in eastern Hubei province, Prof. Gui is currently a Professor of fish genetic breeding. Graduated from Wuhan University, he obtained his B.S. in cell biology in 1982 and M.S. in genetics in 1985. In June 1995, he obtained his Ph.D. in hydrobiology at IHB. Prof. Gui is 2-term director of IHB, serving from 1999 to 2007, and a 2-term director of the State Key Laboratory of Freshwater Ecology and Biotechnology.
Prof. Gui has performed basic and applied studies on fish genetic breeding and the related biology and biotechnology for about 30 years. His series studies on genetic basis and reproduction mechanism of polyploid gibel carp have revealed unique dual modes of unisexual and sexual reproduction, and thereby breed a novel clone strain with significant value by a creative technical approach. Also, he has developed a Y- and X-specific allele marker-assisted sex control technique for mass production of all-male fish. He has published more than 170 SCI indexed papers, 7 academic monographs and textbooks for graduate student and granted 10 patents. In 2011, the project "Studies on genetic basis of unique dual modes of unisexual and sexual reproduction in polyploid Carassius auratus gibelio" led by Prof. Gui was awarded the second prize of National Natural Science Award.
The newly elected CAS academicians comprise 53 Chinese citizens and nine foreign scientists from six countries, expanding the academy's membership to 750 Chinese and 72 foreign members.
