Prof. SONG Weibo from Ocean University of China Visits IHB

Prof. SONG Weibo from Ocean University of China visits IHB on April 10, 2014.
Prof. SONG Weibo from Ocean University of China paid a visit to Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB) on April 10, 2014. During his visit, he gave an oral presentation on the research progress of marine ciliates: biodiversity, cell development and molecular phylogeny.

In his presentation, he firstly reviewed the great contribution that the professors of protozoology such as Prof. WANG Jiaji, Prof. SHEN Yunfen had made to the development of protozoology in China. He introduced the significance of the study of protozoology in the fields of ecology, environmental biology, parasitology and cytology.

Prof. Song summed up the research of marine ciliates carried out by his research team over the past 30 years from 4 aspects, namely, regional endemism, taxonomy, cell development, molecular phylogeny of free-living marine ciliates, and some new approaches.

Prof. Songs research interests are cell development/morphogenesis of ciliated protozoa, morphology and taxonomy of ciliated protozoa and molecular phylogeny of ciliated protozoa. He is the vice president of the Chinese Society of Zoology and president of the Chinese Society of Protozoologists. He is also the board reviewers of the journals such as Systematic and Biodiveristy, Integrative Zoology etc. He received the first prize of Natural Science Award presented by the Ministry of Education in 1999, 2002, 2004, 2009, respectively. In 2004, he received the second prize of the National Natural Science Award of China.
