Sixth Cross-Strait Symposium on Constructed Wetland Held in Hangzhou

The Sixth Cross-Strait Symposium on Constructed Wetland was held in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province from Oct. 27 to Nov. 1, 2014. The theme of the symposium is "Cross-strait cooperation on constructed wetland technology and ecological landscape improvement for urban water bodies". More than 200 experts, scholars and engineers of constructed wetlands attended the symposium.

The symposium was chaired by Prof. XU Xudong, deputy director of IHB. Leaders from the co-organizing partners respectively addressed at the symposium. Prof. ZHANG Si (academician of CAE), Prof. HOU Lian (academician of CAE), Prof. KUANG Tingyun (academician of CAS), Prof. LIU Shuo’an (Taiwan's "National Central University" Distinguished Professor and also the foreign academician of the Russian Federation of Engineering Sciences) gave keynote speeches respectively. Their presentations covered topics on the diversity of tropical marine microbial and their ecological effects, wetland conservation and water security, wetland conservation and utilization strategies in west Hangzhou, application of high resolution satellite imagery.

IHB Prof. WU Zhenbin gave a plenary presentation on the study and engineering of ecological restoration of urban landscape lakes: an illustration from the West Lake in Hangzhou. There were in total 23 oral presentations, 43 submitted papers and 12 posters at the symposium.

Prof. Zhi MAO, CAS academician from Wuhan University, together with Prof. WU Zhenbin and Prof. YANG Lei from Sun Yat-sen University in Taiwan co-chaired the discussion session which centered on the cross-strait wetland study and application.

During the symposium, the attendees had field trips to the ecological restoration engineering programs of the West Lake.

The symposium is hosted by Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, (Taiwan) Sun Yat-sen University, and Division of Environment, Light & Textile Industries Engineering, Chinese Academy of Engineering, organized by Hangzhou Normal University, and co-organized by China Environmental Science Society Community, Hangzhou Municipal Bureau of Landscape and Cultural Relics, Taiwan Wetland Society, China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) and Wuhan University of Technology.

Since 2008, the Cross-Strait Symposium on Constructed Wetland has been held for six times. It has served as a regular platform for experts across the straits to exchange views on the theory, technology development and engineering application of wetland. It helps promote the development of constructed wetland study and application across the straits.
