The 4^th National Symposium on Algal Diversity and Algal Taxonomy was held in Shanghai from Nov. 14 to 16, 2014. It was organized by the Chinese Society of Phycology of Chinese Society for Oceanology and undertaken by Shanghai Normal University. 122 scholars from 43 universities and institutes attended the symposium.    

LIU Xiaomin, vice president of Shanghai Normal University, welcomed the attendees. Prof. SONG Lirong, president of Chinese Society of Phycology, as well as Prof. HU Zhengyu, deputy director of IHB and deputy director of Editorial Committee of Cryptogamia of China, addressed at the symposium respectively.    

29 scholars gave oral presentations, including IHB Prof. LI Renhui who introduced the research progress of cyanobacterial blooms. The old generation of phycologists also attended the symposium and encouraged the young scientists to devote to their studies. The attendees had in-depth interaction on issues pertaining to the resources in China and studies in the algal taxonomy and biological diversity.
