Prof. ZHAO Shidong from Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences paid a visit to IHB on March 31, 2015.

Prof. ZHAO Shidong from Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences paid a visit to Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB) on March 31, 2015. During his visit, Prof Zhao attended the IHB Focus Forum and gave a lecture with the title of “Ecosystems and human well-being: achievements and follow-up actions of Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA)”.    

“We need one-and-a-half earths to meet our needs for natural resources”, Prof. Zhao began his lecture with the big threat that the earth’s ecosystem is facing. He introduced the connotation of ecosystem service and the Millennium ecosystem assessment. With specific emphasis on the changes of ecosystem and ecosystem service in the second half of the 20^th century, he pointed out the effects of the changes on human well-being.    

Towards the end of the lecture, Prof. Zhao listed the policy and measures that should be taken to improve the ecosystem service so as to ensure the sustainable development of society and economy.
