Prof. CAO Wenxuan (CAS academician) gave remarks at the Symposium on Celebrating his 60 Years’ Research Life.

The Symposium on Celebrating Prof. CAO Wenxuan’s (CAS academician) 60 Years’ Research Life was held at Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB) during Oct. 24 and 25, 2015.    

The opening ceremony was chaired by IHB’s deputy director Prof. HU Zhengyu. Prof. ZHAO Jindong (CAS academician), director of IHB, as well as CHEN Pingping, vice president of Wuhan Branch, Chinese Academy of Sciences, gave welcome speeches respectively. IHB Prof. WANG Jianwei introduced the research experiences of Prof. Cao. Later, several colleagues and student who once worked with or studied under Prof. Cao expressed their gratitude to Prof. Cao.    

IHB Prof. GUI Jianfang (CAS academician), Prof. WANG Ding and Prof. HE Shunping respectively gave oral presentations at the symposium, covering topics on model fishes and life science, acoustic study of Yangtze finless porpoises, and genetic basis of adaptation to the extreme environment in the Tibetan Plateau in fishes. Prof. WEI Qiwei from Yangtze River Fisheries Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences, together with Prof. SONG Zhaobing from Sichuan University, Associate Prof. GAO Xin from IHB introduced their latest research progress and interacted with other attendees.    

Prof. CAO Wenxuan graduated from the Department of Biology, Sichuan University in July 1955. His major is zoology. Then he began to work at IHB as research assistant, assistant professor, associate professor and professor. He was once the deputy director and then director of the Laboratory of Ichthyology at IHB and also served as the director of IHB’s academic committee. In 1997, Prof. Cao was elected as the academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences. During his 60 year’s research life, Prof. Cao had field trips to more than 10 provinces and regions. He has been to the Tibetan Plateau for nine times. All his research life has been devoted to the guarding of fish’s home.  

Prof. ZHAO Jindong (CAS academician), director of IHB, presented the Chinese calligraphy which reads “great virtue can carry heavy responsibilities” to Prof. Cao.
