Prof. GUI Jianfang Wins Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation for Scientific and Technological Progress Award

Prof. GUI Jianfang from IHB won the Science and Technology Progress Award of the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation.

The 2015 Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Award Ceremony was held in Beijing on November 4. Prof. GUI Jianfang from Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB) won the Science and Technology Progress Award of the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation.

Prof. GUI Jianfang has focused on basic biology and biotechnologies with particular emphasis on fish genetics and breeding. Prof. Gui has published more than 370 peer-reviewed research papers, including more than 200 SCI-indexed papers.

As a team leader, he and his colleagues have performed a series of studies on reproduction and development mechanisms of gibel carp (Carassius auratus gibelio), selected its diverse clone strains, revealed its dual modes of unisexual gynogenesis and sexual reproduction, and thereby clarified the reproduction mechanism for genetic diversity and long-term survival in unisexual organisms.

Through an original biotechnology route, he and his colleagues have bred a novel aquaculture variety with great application value. They have identified numerous functional genes in several important aquaculture fishes, exploited new directions of molecular regulation networks that are related to economically important traits and molecular breeding, isolated Y chromosome-specific and X chromosome-specific markers, and thereby created the marker-assisted sex control breeding biotechnology.

His main publications and new insights have exerted significant international impact in the scientific field of fish genetics and breeding, and his results have been widely applied in Chinese aquaculture. Dr. Gui was elected an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2013.

The Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation (HLHL) was founded in March 1994 by philanthropists SH Ho, KK Leung, Ho Tim, and Lee Quo Wei. The annual award recognizes outstanding scientific and technological professionals in China.
