Charm of Science: IHB Participates in 2016 National Science Week
IHB participated in the 2016 National Science Week, launched on May 13, 2016 at Xianning Vocational Technical College.
The 2016 Hubei Science Week was launched at Xianning Vocational Technical College on May 13, 2016. This year’s theme was “leading innovation, mutual development".
At the opening ceremony, latest S&T achievements were displayed. Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB), driving its mobile lab which was converted by a bus, joined this year’s activity as one of the exhibitors. The stability of the mobile lab is pivoted with a thickened steel chassis and four telescopic frames which can adjust the length. The lab is equipped with two spaces, one is the driving space and the other is the experiment space used for sample collection and analysis. The allogynogenetic gibel carp “CAS Ⅲ", bred by IHB Prof. GUI Jianfang and his colleagues, was also exhibited with the mobile lab.
On the morning of May 14, IHB invited Prof. ZHANG Xianfeng, director of the Museum for Aquatic Organisms, gave a lecture with the title of “Keeping the smile of the Yangtze finless porpoise” for the parents and their children. About 150 parents and kids attended the lecture. Prof. Zhang introduced the living habit and status of the Yangtze finless porpoise and the efforts scientists have been made to save the Yangtze finless porpoise. He appealed to the public for the protection of the endangered species and the environment.
The 2016 Science Week lasted from May 13 to 21. IHB, on the one hand, invited the public to visit the science popularizing venues including the State Key Laboratory of Freshwater Ecology and Biotechnology, the Baiji Dolphinarium and Donghu Lake Ecosystem Experimental Station. On the other hand, IHB encouraged the scientists to approach the public and popularize the S&T knowledge.
