Prof. YAO Tandong (CAS academician), director of Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, paid a visit to Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB) on May 4, 2016.  During his visit, he gave a lecture with the title of "Studies on the environment change of the Tibetan Plateau and its assessment" to IHB scientists and students

The Tibetan Plateau is one of the most sensitive areas when the earth is undergoing global climate change. It is also the earth's third largest solid reservoir and the third largest freshwater resource. The environment change of the Tibetan Plateau has received world-wide focus. In his lecture, Prof. YAO introduced the latest breakthroughs in their study from the following aspects: trigger point about the collision and uplift, remote effect of radiation source, and chains of Monsoon westerlies. Researches on the interactions of several circle-layers in the plateau areas were published in the journals of Nature and PNAS.

Prof. YAO also introduced six systems with specific emphasis: conclusions of climate assessment, conclusions of water body assessment, conclusions of ecosystems assessment, conclusions of epicontinental environment assessment, human activities effects and risks of environmental disasters. After the lecture, the audience communicated with Prof. YAO on issues related to the glacial dynamics and possible effects of glaciers melting.

Prof. YAO worked on the research of glacier and environment change. He initiated and then developed the ice core research in China. His related researches were published in Science and reported in Nature.

Prof. ZHU Zuoyan (CAS academician) chaired the lecture.
