Prof. Yuzhong ZHANG from Shandong University visited IHB on May 24, 2017.

Prof. Yuzhong ZHANG from Shandong University was invited to visit Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of Chinese Academy of Sciences on May 24th, 2017. During his visit, he gave a lecture with the title of “Metabolic mechanism of DMSP and TMAO by marine bacteria.” 

Prof. Zhang first gave a general introduction about the current knowledge on the biogeochemical cycle of marine organic matters. Then he demonstrated the researches of his group on the detailed enzymatic mechanisms of the catalytic reactions for the metabolism of DMSP and TMAO, two important marine organic matters. At last, he also mentioned his recent work on how bacteria removing the metabolite acrylic acid.  

In the Q&A session, Prof. Zhang and the audience had a discussion on the crystallographic analysis technology and the evolution mechanism of the DMSP and TMAO metabolic enzymes. 

Prof. Zhang is a winner of National Science Fund for Outstanding Young Scholars and a winner of Taishan Scholars. Now he is the director of the marine biotechnology research center, Shandong University. Prof. Zhang and his team mainly focus on researches in the diversity and utilization of cold-adapted enzymes from abyssal and polar regions, their adaptive mechanism in biochemistry and ecology.
