The Cross-Strait Symposium on Aquatic Resources which centered on the project “mechanism underlying sex differentiation of hermaphroditic fish” was held at Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of Chinese Academy of Sciences on June 27, 2017. The project was jointly supported by the National Natural Science Foundation and Taiwan Guoding Li Foundation of Science and Technology Development. The research team led by Prof. Qingfeng Zhang from Taiwan Ocean University, as well as the research team led by IHB Prof. HU Wei and other scholars and students from IHB attended this symposium.

At the symposium, Prof. XU Xudong gave a welcome speech. IHB Prof. ZHU Zuoyan (CAS academician) and Prof. Qingfeng Zhang chaired the symposium. Prof. Xuanru Zheng from Kaohsiung Marine University, Associate Prof. Guanzhong Wu and Dr. Qianru Ling from Taiwan Ocean University gave oral presentations with the titles of “Gonadal development and expression of sex-specific genes during sex differentiation in the Japanese eel”, “From dioecism to hermaphroditism: the transform of gonadal cells” and “Activation of brain steroidogenesis and neurogenesis during the gonadal differentiation in protandrous black porgy”, respectively. Prof. HU Wei, Assistant Prof. CHEN Ji and Dr. XIA Hui from IHB gave oral presentations with the titles of “Functional study on GnRH in sex differentiation of hermaphroditic fish”, “Gene editing in non-model fish, using Acipenser ruthenus as an example” and “Loss of m6A in METTL3 zebrafish mutants disrupts gamete maturation and reduces fertility”, respectively.

During the symposium, both sides discussed on the topics of molecular breeding technology and gonadal development of hermaphroditic fish such as rice field eel and eel. Further collaboration plan was decided as well.
