Weishan Lake, the larges freshwater lake in the north of the country, is the storage lake and water tunnel for the eastern line of South-to-North Water Diversion Project. The ecological environment health of Weishan Lake is crucial to the water quality of the eastern line of South-to-North Water Diversion Project. Fishery sustainable development in Weishan Lake ensures the regional ecological development.

The research station, aiming to solve the problems in the ecological environment and fishery development of Weishan Lake, will conduct systematic long-term monitoring and pre-warning studies of the lake ecosystem, and evaluation and sustainable utilization of fishery resources. It will ensure the water quality of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project and provide scientific support for the sustainable development of the regional economy.

Recent years, IHB has been focusing on the ecological environment issues existing in the eastern line of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project. The institute has established research stations besides Hongze Lake and Gaoyou Lake. Together with the Weishan Lake research station, these three stations will provide scientific support for the water ecosystem health, regional ecological environment protection and fishery sustainable development of the eastern line of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project.
