CAS Vice President Investigates Lake Dianchi Ecosystem Field Station

DING Zhongli, vice president of CAS, paid a visit to Lake Dianchi Ecosystem Field Station on July 30, 2017.

DING Zhongli, vice president of Chinese Academy of Sciences, paid a visit to Lake Dianchi Ecosystem Field Station affiliated to Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of Chinese Academy of Sciences on July 30, 2017 and investigated the pilot engineering center of the on-going project Technologies and demonstration on ecological scale restoration of Lake Caohai, a part of Lake Dianchi supported by the Major Science and Technology Program for Water Pollution Control and Treatment.

The delegation led by DING Zhongli had a field trip to the demonstration base in Lake Caohai. IHB Prof. XIAO Bangding, principal investigator of the project, introduced the work IHB had been doing in Lake Dianchi over the past 20 years. In situ ecological restoration experiments in Lake Dianchi has been carried out since 2000. As a good example, IHB researchers recently have successfully reestablished a submerged macrophyte dominated clear water, with a coverage of submerged macrophytes more than 40%, transparency more than 1 m, in this shallow eutrophic lake. The water quality and biodiversity were also improved significantly (e.g. TP <0.1 mg/LTN<1.5 mg/L).

Ding Zhongli investigated the restoration work carried out at the demonstration base and positively commented on the   restoration of aquatic vegetation and cyanobacterial bloom control. Ding said that IHB researchers had achieved progress in the ecological restoration of Lake Dianchi and pointed out the significance of ecological environment protection and treatment in Lake Dianchi. He stressed that the restoration of Lake Dianchi shall resort to the means of biological treatment and comprehensive regulation of ecosystem.

In the end, Ding suggested IHB shall seize the opportunity to restore the ecology of Lake Dianchi and make contribution to the local water environment treatment.
