8th Cross-Strait Symposium on Constructed Wetland Held in Yinchuan

 

The eighth Cross-Strait Symposium on Constructed Wetland was held in Yinchuan from Sept. 15 to 21, 2017. 

The eighth Cross-Strait Symposium on Constructed Wetland was held in Yinchuan, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region which is known as "Southern Frontier" from Sept. 15 to 21, 2017. The Symposium was hosted by Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Sun Yat-Sen University (Taiwan, SYSU) and Department of Textile and Environmental Engineering, Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE). It was organized by the Fisheries Research Institute (FRI), Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region; and co-organized by China University of Geosciences (Wuhan), Wuhan University of Technology, Taiwan Wetland Society (TWS), Branch of Environmental Biology, Chinese Society for Environmental Sciences, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region Department of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry (NXAAH), Science and Technology Association (STA), Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, Ningxia Agricultural Investment Group Co. Ltd., Ningxia state farms Group Co. Ltd., and so on. More than 160 experts, scholars and engineers of constructed wetlands from Chinese mainland and Taiwan attended the symposium, especially CAE academician YANG Zhifeng and ZHANG Yuanhang, director of NXAAH, as well as related officials from sponsor, organizer and co-organizer units. 

The symposium was chaired by IHB's deputy director XU Xudong. HU Zhengyu (deputy director of IHB), YANG Zhifeng (academician of CAE), YANG Lei (professor of SYSU), MA Xinmin (Deputy Director of NXAAH) respectively addressed at the symposium. 

The theme of the symposium was “Cross-strait technology cooperation on constructed wetland and ecological construction in Chinese midwest”. CAE academician YANG Zhifeng, Chairman LIN Xingzhu (TWS), Prof. WU Zhenbin (IHB), Prof. LU Taiying (director of Environmental Protection Bureau of Pingdong County, Taiwan, PDEPB) gave keynote speeches at the symposium, respectively. Their presentations topics were the impact of reclamation on coastal wetlands and ecological restoration, the vulnerability assessment of tropical coastal ecosystems under climate change, the review of the cross-strait symposium on constructed wetland and the development of constructed wetland in China, and the new hope of the stream in the future of tem thousand years - take Wannian stream as an example, respectively. Besides, there were another 30 special reports and 28 papers at the symposium. 

During the symposium, there was also an plaque unveiling ceremony of workstation for CAS academician CAO Wenxuan. The ceremony was chaired by WU Xudong, Director of Fisheries Bureau, Ningxia Hui Department of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry. WANG Bing, director of the science and technology consulting center of the autonomous region, read out the documents of the academician workstation. CAE academician ZHANG Yuanhang and vice chairman CHEN Guoshun (STA) launched the opening ceremony for the workstation and addressed at the ceremony, respectively. 

As a tradition, Prof. WU Zhenbin and Prof. YANG Lei co-chaired the comprehensive discussion before the closing ceremony. Many experts witnessed the development of the symposium and cross-strait constructed wetland, and gained a lot. There were experts at the symposium making the poem “One platform bears the cross-strait feeling, eight times swordfight lighten thousands lamp, wetlands appear in the Divine Land everywhere, sun and moon are bright as well as running water is limpid”; “Chinese and western technology treat with the pollution, cross-strait cooperation surmount the technical difficulty together, ecological restoration benefits everything like water, constructed wetland emulates the nature”, to express the common feelings of the cross-strait wetland experts. 

During the symposium, the experts investigated demonstration project of sand lake ecological restoration which was the cooperation project between IHB and FRI. Meanwhile, they investigated Aiyi river system, Yuehai wetland, and made suggestions for the local ecological construction. 

Since 2008, the Cross-Strait Symposium on Constructed Wetland initiated and organized by Prof. WU Zhenbin and Prof. YANG Lei has been held eight times in Wuhan, Kaohsiung, Haikou, Taipei, Yichang, Hangzhou, Chiayi, Yinchuan, respectively. It has served as an increasingly mature and diversified platform for the cross-strait experts and technical managers through conversation, investigation, staff exchange and other various forms. The experts and representatives communicated with each other, exchanged ideas and promoted friendship, and gained dozens of cross-strait exchange cooperation and fruitful achievement.
