IHB Leads Survey on Water Ecology of Lakes in Wuhan

The visiting delegation investigated the performance of the project “Survey on Water Ecology of Lakes in Wuhan”.

A six-member delegation including YU Liuqi, deputy director general of Wuhan Water Affairs Bureau, ZHU Jiusheng, deputy director general of Wuhan Lake Management Bureau, and WANG Huaiqing, president of Wuhan Science Academy of Water Affairs, paid a visit Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of Chinese Academy of Sciences on March 19, 2018. Their visit was to investigate the performance of the project “Survey on Water Ecology of Lakes in Wuhan”.

IHB’s deputy director Prof. XU Xudong welcomed the delegation. He first expressed his gratitude to Wuhan Water Affairs Bureau for its support. He pointed out the significance of the survey on water ecology of lakes in Wuhan because the city is famous for its numerous lakes and now China is constructing water ecological civilization and protection of the Yangtze River. He said that IHB would join all the scientific strengths of other participating units to strengthen the project management and finish the project with high quality. The project team would provide basic information and detailed data to support the ecological treatment of the lakes in Wuhan.

YU Liuqi said he believed that with IHB’s strengths in talents and research, the project could achieve its goal. He hoped the Bureau could cooperate with IHB in water environment protection so as to push forward the construction of water ecological civilization in Wuhan.

It is learned that the project team overcame difficulties such as the tight schedules, large tasks, diverse types of lakes, complex situations and rare cold temperatures during its first field work in the winter and early spring. They finished water ecological survey of dozens of lakes, accumulated field survey experiences with multi-unit participation and obtained valuable research data.
