Prof. WU Guangxia from Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences of Chinese Academy of Sciences paid a visit to Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of Chinese Academy of Sciences on May 3, 2018. During his visit, he gave an oral presentation with the title of “Principle of membrane separation technology” for IHB scientists and students.
Membrane separation technology is a high-tech industry developed in the 1950s. It mainly includes microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, reverse osmosis, gas separation and osmotic vaporization, electrodialysis, etc. In his presentation, Prof. Wu introduced the development and status of membrane separation technology.
Beginning from the basic principle and the characteristics of membrane separation process, Prof. Wu explained the general membrane structure, membrane preparation, membrane module design, filtration system design, cleaning methods, and the current development status, advantages and disadvantages of membrane bioreactor (MBR). Aiming at the key problems of membrane concentration polarization and membrane fouling, Wu made a systematic interpretation and put forward some innovative theoretical viewpoints.
The presentation also introduces a new spinning process developed by the team, which can produce big inside diameter and straight hollow fiber membranes. They also produce two kinds of hollow fiber membranes with smooth inner walls and corrugated inner walls. Its outstanding characteristic is that the end surface of hollow fiber will not be blocked, especially suitable for the separation of liquid with more solids and larger particles.
The researchers and graduate students of the relevant research groups listened carefully, and had in-depth discussions and exchanges with Wu.
