Prof. KONG Yan from University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) paid a visit to Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of Chinese Academy of Sciences on October 11, 2019 to give a lecture on the psychological issues related to the cultivation of students.
By illustrating several real cases, Prof. Kong drew a mental sketch of the students for the tutors. “Our students desired to do better but in the meantime they are not mentally independent.” Kong said. “Their personal development is limited by their knowledge and ability but they hope to pursue a much brighter future. Three pressures are on them: emotion needs, study pressure and economic pressure.”
In terms of depression, Prof. Kong discussed on how the tutors could do to help the students suffering from depression.
As a tutor for Ph.D. students, Prof. Kong also shared her experiences on the cultivation of students. She holds a lab meeting every week and each student has the opportunity to give a presentation. She encouraged the students to support each other so as to build a sense of belonging.
