A ten-member research team from Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of Chinese Academy of Sciences investigated the water ecology in the nearby lakes of Huoshenshan Hospital, the first makeshift hospital in Wuhan dedicated to treating patients infected with the novel coronavirus, on April 30, 2020.

IHB researchers investigated the sewage treatment facilities and their operation and disinfection treatment conditions.

They also collected water samples and environmental samples of aquatic organisms and sediment in lakes and waters surrounding Huoshenshan Hospital to investigate the effects of extensive use of disinfectants and disinfection by-products on aquatic organisms and aquatic ecosystem during the COVID-19 pandemic.

As a participant, IHB undertook the research task of the safe treatment of medical wastewater and water ecological restoration in highly sensitive waters, which is a part of the research project “the disposal of medical waste & wastewater sludge and the impact and treatment countermeasures of soil and groundwater during the COVID-19 pandemic”, led by China University of Geosciences (CUG) in Wuhan. IHB Prof. WU Zhenbin is the task leader.

Ten days ago on April 19, IHB researchers went to the Leishenshan Hospital and the surrounding Huangjia Lake for research and sampling work.
